Biomethane for Transport

Historically, diesel cars and trucks have been extremely popular in the UK, in part because they produce less carbon dioxide than petrol vehicles. But in 2012 the World Health Organization reclassified diesel pollution as a “definite carcinogen”. It can cause lung cancer and breathing difficulties.
Last year, a World Health Organization report found 10 towns and cities in the UK, including London, Glasgow, Leeds, Nottingham, Southampton and Oxford, had breached what are regarded as safe levels of tiny carcinogen particles known as PM10. And 39 urban areas also breached the safe levels for a measure of even smaller particles, known as PM2.5
“The headline grabbing move to ban diesel and petrol vehicles by 2040 is great, but way too distant to tackle the air quality crisis now. However, there is a very clean, cost effective solution readily available today. Biomethane used for transport has 70% less carbon impact than petrol or diesel, and most importantly zero harmful particulate emissions. Switching to biomethane is easy, requiring no additional capital investment for CNG ready fleets” said Steven Scott, Sales Manager, Puregas Solutions.
As UK cities continue to opt for biomethane buses to fulfil Clean Air Zone requirements, proposals in the recent Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) consultation may stimulate further the uptake of biomethane as a vehicle fuel.

Puregas Solutions unique CApure biogas upgrading process recovers over 99.9% of the biomethane present in the raw biogas, by chemically absorbing the CO2 in the raw gas. The selective organic solvents used in this process are highly efficient, resulting in an end product containing more than 99% methane. The biomethane is of high enough calorific value to be directly injected into the natural gas grid without the need to enrich with propane saving significant costs.
CApure technology achieves the highest methane recovery, reducing methane slip to below 0.1%. There is no additional cost or energy requirement associated with treating the tail gas and harmful emissions to the environment are avoided
